Perfect Proportions®: The Meaning of the Boxes

Perfect Perportions

The logo above is associated with my practice and possesses a lot of meaning for me. It is a graphic representation of my practice philosophy of rejuvenation, which is based upon achieving powerful yet natural/subtle results for my patients through my specific methodology. Real beauty is timeless and has an instant connection with the deeper parts of our brain. When we think about beauty, we often assume it’s only subjective and based on the eye of the beholder. Although we all have different likes and dislikes, we also have a natural, hard-wired, objective affinity to certain appearances. When we analyze those appearances, we can see they typically have certain things in common. Interestingly, these things in common have a mathematical basis and form the objective basis by which we appreciate beauty. True beauty has a certain harmony to it based on containing certain … [Read more...]

What Causes Dark Circles Under the Eyes?

What Causes Dark Circles Under the Eyes?

As we age, we discover that one of the most noticeable changes to our appearance involves the eye area. Perhaps the most common complaint I receive as a specialist in cosmetic eyelid rejuvenation is that my patients have heard from others that they look sick or tired, even when they are feeling well and rested. The origin of such unwanted comments is typically the nonverbal messages the lower eyelid region sends as we age.  This area can be affected by many different factors which each contribute to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes—the first is the convexity or concavity of the lower eyelid fat. If the lower eyelid fat protrudes into the lower lid region, it often catches overhead shadows. Take a look at the shadows demonstrated by the blue arrows in the photo of this patient whom I helped with my lower eyelid rejuvenation surgery.   Because most light is … [Read more...]

Lower Eyelid Bags vs. Festoons

Festoons vs. Lower Eyelid Bags

What Is the Difference between Lower Eyelid Bags and Lower Eyelid Festoons? Many people who undergo lower eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of their lower lids are dissatisfied afterwards because of one factor which can complicate the results from lower eyelid surgery. This factor is lower eyelid/cheek festoons and malar mounds. Festoons are a medical condition in which the skin of the lower eyelid becomes significantly damaged, usually by the sun. This damaged skin can result in folds in the lower eyelids and can lead to swollen mounds on the cheeks. They often occur with age and are more common in people with lighter skin types. Festoons occur in many people seeking lower eyelid rejuvenation and if not corrected at the time that lower lid surgery is performed, the condition can become exacerbated and make the lower eyelids look worse after surgery. Take a look at … [Read more...]

Facial Rejuvenation to Facial Transplant: The Spectrum

Facial Rejuvenation to Facial Transplant

I often speak about why I like to help people with their appearance. Most of what I discuss is related to understanding the impact our appearances have on how the world views and relates to us. When I cover these topics, I explain we are biologically driven to evaluate each other based on the 3 Ds of Aging: Deterioration of the Facial Skin Deflation of the Face Decent of the Face It’s true that typically when we first meet one another we evaluate each other’s skin tone and tend to appreciate clear, beautiful, and even skin. We then evaluate each other’s eyes and mouth regions. This happens quickly and on a subconscious basis. We aren’t being shallow; it’s just how our brains work. Our subconscious then tells our conscious mind how we feel about that person based on what we see in those areas. If the skin is irregular, we may see the person as older or … [Read more...]

Patient Success Stories: Transforming Lives with Non-Surgical Procedures

Patient Success Stories: Transforming Lives with Non-Surgical Procedures

Sometimes it seems like the best way to illustrate the effectiveness of my cosmetic procedures and surgeries is to share real-life success stories from patients who are just like you. These are people who want to make a positive change in their lives, rejuvenating their appearance and transforming the way people view them. My 5 minute nose job is a procedure which can help many different types of problem noses with a quick injectable office treatment. People undergoing this procedure often experience a new lease on life. I especially recall one patient I treated with this procedure. She needed this performed on a particularly busy day for me. I had in-office surgeries to perform, so I scheduled this 5 minute nose job procedure early in the day. I gave her a numbing solution to numb her nose and then let it go to work while I went on to perform one of the in-office … [Read more...]

Facial Cosmetic Surgery Provides Increased Quality of Life

Sisters Experience First Cosmetic Treatment Together

Many people consider facial cosmetic treatments as frivolous and procedures only for those with a self-absorbed personality. However, this idea is the furthest from the truth for the majority of patients. In my practice, I’ve seen and heard numerous stories about the powerful impact my procedures and surgeries have had on the lives and personal interactions of my patients. I think this relates to what I’ve spoken about previously in my blogs. We are social beings and relate to each other based on nonverbal messages sent by our face. When those messages are repaired and optimized, the world can relate to and actually treat my patients in a better way. I thought it would be interesting to share a story about the impact my work has had on my patients. Sisters Experience First Cosmetic Treatment Together This story involves a pair of sisters who came to see me one day. They … [Read more...]

Beauty : What is it and what is it good for?

Beauty: What is it?

Beauty is defined by Webster as the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. Beauty can exist in many forms, but physical beauty is one of the forms that most comes to mind when discussing this subject. Throughout history the importance of beauty has been recognized. In ancient Greece, Aristotle, , when asked why people desire physical beauty once replied, “No one who is not blind could ask that question.” In society and from a practical basis, Nancy Etcoff deftly observed in her book, “Survival of the Prettiest”, that we routinely evaluate the attractiveness of one another on a daily basis. In this book, Ms. Etcoff took a scientific view of beauty and its role in our society.  Some of her observations included that our sensitivity to beauty is a biological adaptation governed by brain … [Read more...]

Common Problems with Cosmetic Botox® Injections (and How to Avoid Them)

feature

Botox® is a very safe treatment that can alleviate or repair medical and cosmetic conditions for many patients. While Botox® was first used for medical purposes as described in my previous blog posting, the unanticipated side effect of smoothing facial wrinkles for those initial medical patients led to its unprecedented use for cosmetic purposes. Over the years, Botox® treatments have become more widespread, and today many medical professionals have jumped on the Botox® bandwagon, offering treatments to their patients. With this increase in the number of practitioners using Botox® and the variable skill levels of those practitioners, I have been seeing more and more cosmetic issues, and, in some cases, even medical problems resulting from those less-than-expert treatments. It takes skill and an intimate understanding of facial aesthetics and the underlying anatomy to create … [Read more...]

More Than Beauty

Botox-Tampa-Florida

More than Beauty: Botox® is now FDA-approved to treat chronic migraines Botox® was recently approved by the FDA to help patients with chronic migraine headaches. This move promises to be a significant help to the approximately 3,000,000 Americans suffering from chronic migraines. Migraines are a group of brain-related symptoms, including severe headaches and nausea as well as temporary vision, muscle, or numbness problems. It is well documented that this is a debilitating condition for many people. In fact, a certain subset of individuals with migraines experiences them more than half of the days in a month, leading to a diagnosis of “chronic migraines.” The World Health Organization states that migraines are the 19th most debilitating disease and that a day with a severe migraine can be more debilitating than paralysis, arthritis or even blindness. In this recent FDA … [Read more...]

Why Are Lasers Ideal In Helping With Eyelid and Facial Rejuvenation

21887_Nefertiti1

How is it possible to repair over 70 years of sun damaged skin in 1 hour? Is it possible to make a cut through skin without bleeding? How can red spots and pigment deep in the skin be improved in an outpatient procedure with no down time? The answer is with laser skin resurfacing and special light sources. A laser is a beam of light with special properties: 1) the laser is of one color; 2) the waves in the beam of light are all synchronized in the same rhythm. 3) The light in a laser beam comes out in a straight line and can be focused to a small spot. These special properties can be used to our unique advantage in helping patients with a variety of facial problems. There is a principal which guides the use of lasers for treatments on the body called “Selective Photothermolysis.” This was first described by Dr. Anderson and Dr. Parrish in 1983. The word … [Read more...]
