Take a look at these two photos and consider which one is the Man and which is the Woman.

What did you decide?

Did you say the left appeared more feminine and the right more masculine? These were the findings of many people who took this test.

What were the factors that made you determine which was the Man and which was the Woman?

The Truth?

In actuality, this is a photo of the same person with different color contrasts in the eyes and mouth region in the two photos.

These photos were from a scientific study by the Harvard Psychologist Richard Russell. He studied the sex differences in the facial contrast in men and women. In these photos, he lightened the eyes and lips in the left photo and darkened the eyes and lips in the right photo. This was to prove his point that the degree of facial contrasts in a face contribute to the relative masculinity or femininity of a face.

Men and Women are Different!

It turns out that men in general have fewer differences in the contrast in their faces. To say it another way, men have less color differences throughout the different parts of their faces.

Women on the other hand have great differences in contrast in their faces or more differences in the color in different parts of their face. This is seen especially in the eye and mouth regions. Women have more natural color to their lips as compared to men.

Women intrinsically know what I’ve talked about before which is that people look at the mouth and eye area first when viewing another person. These are the two most powerful areas of the face for non-verbal communication with the outside world. This is why women intrinsically seek to highlight their eyes by wearing mascara and eye shadow and their lips by wearing lip liner and lipstick. By adding color to these areas, their faces are perceived by others as being more feminine.

Take a look at this woman with makeup on and without makeup on, which appears more feminine.

The increased color of her eyes and lips stimulate the non-verbal messages sent to our unconscious brains that assess beauty and feminine attractiveness and cause us to see the photo on the left as more feminine. This is another case of our subconscious brain being hard wired to find certain facial features and ratios beautiful. I discussed this concept of our subconscious brain before in my Blog: Perfect Proportions®: The Meaning of the Boxes

Facial Rejuvenation

As a specialist in Facial Rejuvenation, I like to concentrate on treatments that help optimize a person’s appearance in the eye and mouth region. I do this because I have studied how the brain sees another persons face. I want to help optimize those keys areas that make the biggest impact for my patients on the way that other people see them.

Although my procedures can help people with these two parts of the face, women especially can help themselves by wearing makeup that increases the contrast between their eye area and the surrounding skin and the lips and the surrounding skin. This will make those areas a greater contrast and therefore make a woman’s face more feminine in their appearance.

Sometimes though, makeup isn’t enough and that’s why patients come to see me. Understanding deep brain processes like the one demonstrated in example and the way our brains processes the faces of one another allow me to take advantage of this knowledge and get results which restore natural balance to the face. This leads to results which are powerful yet subtle. My patients in Florida and all over the country report that other people comment on how great they look after my help but can’t put there finger on exactly what changed, and it’s the secret my patients have the prerogative to keep to themselves or share with others as they like.

If you need help to Restore, Reveal and Reclaim your natural beauty, I’d be happy to be of service to you as you travel your journey towards facial rejuvenation.

The aging process affects our bodies in many ways, both internally and externally. Since the beginning of time, people have been longing for some method to help them remain vital and live longer on this earth.

From early mentions of Herodotus in the land of the Ethiopians,

to stories of Alexander the great crossing the Land of Darkness to find the life restoring spring,

to our more recent tales of Ponce De Leon, many have searched high and low for a magic elixir that would restore youth.

A recent article caught my eye and I thought it would be interesting to you. There have been many claims about stem cells and their ability to heal the body. In my own practice, I’ve seen the power of these cells help my patients heal faster from my procedures.

The one contentious issue with stem cells is their source. Many people don’t feel comfortable with the use of embryonic stem cells depending on their origin.

In this article, scientists at John Hopkins, described how they have developed a technique to take aged blood cells and restore them back to a primitive stem cell state, which can then develop into any type of cell in the body. The goal of this was to bypass the political issues with gathering stem cells from embryos.

The way this was done was fascinating and began with the transformation of adult blood cells into young heart cells, using plasmids, which are DNA molecules usually present in cells that can replicate themselves independently from a DNA’s chromosomes. They then disappear after they complete their function.

Previous efforts would only yield 1 out of 100 blood cells that would turn into these younger cells. However, new methods allow 50-60 cells out of 100 to turn into the younger cells.

This was described in the Journal of Public Library of Science on August 8th.

In their technique, they took blood cells from a patient’s spinal cord and then used electric pulses in a lab to create an opening in those cells. They then inserted those plasmids into the cells and then triggered the blood cells to revert back to a more primitive state. They then cultured them with bone marrow cells. These cells converted to a more primitive state within one to two weeks.

These cells can then possibly be used to regrow parts of person’s body, possibly forever.

Other research at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine has been able to rebuild part of our anatomy in the lab using a constructed matrix over which stem cells are poured. The cells, in a way, know how to rebuild a tissue if given a framework on which to grow.

This can be compared to a building that is framed out initially and then approached by subcontractors to build out the inside of the building. A subcontractor would know where to hang dry wall and where to put in outlets etc.

In a similar way, it seems that our own bodies know how to rebuild itself if given a framework on which to build.

See these photos from the Wake Forest lab in which they are re-growing a persons ear using a constructed framework over which a persons cells are poured:

Here the bones in a persons finger.

They also reportedly rebuilt a human kidney in a lab, which is capable of making urine.

The ability to have a body which functions at a much younger age or the ability to regrow injured body parts is both exciting and seductive. As this field in regenerative medicine becomes more advanced and sophisticated, we as doctors can hopefully help more patients live full and healthier lives.

The other day, I saw a patient who wanted my assistance in changing his appearance. Others often said he looked sleepy and tired even was he was feeling awake and energetic. He wanted to change his appearance to one that was more vibrant and engaging.

In our conversation, he mentioned that he had always had the appearance he was asking me to help him change. He was born this way, and he recalls people in his youth telling him to get more sleep and stay more alert because of the facial messages he was broadcasting.

I explained to him that in his case, I would be helping him with a facial transformation as opposed to a rejuvenation because I would be transforming his appearance to one he had never possessed before.

I often speak about helping people Restore, Reveal and ReclaimTM their natural beauty, but I haven’t yet explored on this blog the difference between rejuvenation and transformation. So, I would like to do that today.

Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation of a person’s natural beauty involves restoring or bringing a person back to an appearance they enjoyed in the past. This is very rewarding for me as a physician because of the beneficial effect is has on the way my patients are perceived by others.

Examples of rejuvenation include when I restore a patient’s skin to a point before it was damaged by years of environmental and sun damage, when I restore an eyelid and eyebrow region back to the way it was when a patient was younger, or when I use my Radiantlift® procedure to restore a patient’s face back to a younger, more even completion and more beautiful and symmetric balance.

In the first example of rejuvenation below, I helped this patient restore her skin back to a healthier and more vibrant appearance. She loved how this procedure helped improve the lines above her lips that had bothered her for so many years and well as the general healthy glow of her face.

The next patient was another example of rejuvenation. After she received my Radiantlift® procedure, she reported that it brought back the natural volume of her youth as well as the vibrant radiance of her skin that she remembered when she was younger.

The next patient had had a nose job years before which went badly. She felt that she was stuck with this crooked nose for the rest of her life because surgery wasn’t able to finesse a nose such as hers back to a normal appearance. When she asked if I could help her, I said that my 5 Minute Nose JobTM could do exactly this. She was thrilled with the results; now people were concentrating on her eyes and mouth instead of her nose when they looked at her, and she was able to communicate with others better as a result of this. I’ve found many cases of bad nose jobs where I’ve been able to finesse the nose back to a better state with this procedure. All of the applications of this 5 Minute Nose JobTM are instances of rejuvenation.

Finally, in this forth example of rejuvenation, I helped this patient restore and rejuvenate her eyelid region back to a more vibrant and youthful appearance, and as result, she reported that people started relating to her in a better way.

Transformation

In other cases, I’ve helped patients reveal or uncover a beauty or appearance that has always been theirs, though they may not have known it.

It takes a special eye to see in a person’s face that which is possible.

This can be very a powerful change for my patients in terms of the way they see themselves and the way the world sees them. Examples of transformation include certain eyelid and eyebrow elevation procedures, as well as an application of a procedure we’ve already discussed, my 5 Minute Nose JobTM.

The patient below had always had an uneven nose with a bump on it. I remember the day that I first helped her. It had been a busy day and she was the first patient in my schedule on that morning. I began the procedure by numbing her nose and then helped another patient with a small procedure in another room. After finishing with the 2nd patient, I returned to her and in approximately 5 minutes, I non-surgically reshaped her nose to a straighter and more balanced appearance. When I gave her a mirror and she looked at her reflection, tears started to stream down her face. All of us in the room felt our eyes well up, too. She had been bothered by the way her nose looked since she was a child. The process of straightening it for her fulfilled a lifelong desire, as we could all see from the emotional reaction to her transformation.

Transformations often elicit similar responses. The process of giving a patient an answer to their deepest desires is very powerful for the patient and very rewarding for me as a physician.

In this next case of transformation, I helped this woman improve the heaviness above her lids. She told me that others thought she was very serious all the time, and she wanted to change this. She had initially requested an eyelid surgery, but with a close clinical eye, I realized that her heaviness was actually due to her eyebrow falling into her eyelid space. I questioned her about this, and she told me that ever since she was a teenager, she had had difficulty applying eye shadow because there was no space above her eyelids to apply it. In certain individuals, the brows are naturally low. Unfortunately for her, this flat configuration of her brow was more masculine in appearance and made her look stern and serious even when she wasn’t feeling that way inside.

I helped her with an endoscopic, minimal incision brow lift, and she was instantly struck by how open and approachable she now appeared. She reported that others began relating her better as a result of the procedure. This procedure was a case of facial transformation because it gave her an appearance beneficial to her which she never had had in the past.

It was and is such a privilege and honor to be able to help people with such sensitive issues, where the patient’s facial appearance has often been bothering them for many years. This is the power of transformations.

Final Words

Whether a procedure is one of rejuvenation or transformation has to do more with the patient than the procedure. A consultation will help me determined which procedure your situation calls for.

As I’ve said before, whether I’m helping people rejuvenate or transform their appearance, I think optimizing our appearance is everyone’s right and privilege.

After helping people restore/rejuvenate or reveal/transform their natural beauty, they can then reclaim the beauty that was always theirs to begin with.

The logo above is associated with my practice and possesses a lot of meaning for me. It is a graphic representation of my practice philosophy of rejuvenation, which is based upon achieving powerful yet natural/subtle results for my patients through my specific methodology.

Real beauty is timeless and has an instant connection with the deeper parts of our brain. When we think about beauty, we often assume it’s only subjective and based on the eye of the beholder. Although we all have different likes and dislikes, we also have a natural, hard-wired, objective affinity to certain appearances. When we analyze those appearances, we can see they typically have certain things in common.

Interestingly, these things in common have a mathematical basis and form the objective basis by which we appreciate beauty. True beauty has a certain harmony to it based on containing certain mathematical ratios that positively influence our subconscious mind.

The ratio I’m speaking about is one based on the research of a mathematician in the 1200’s named Leonard Fibonacci, and is the balance between the number 1 and the number 1.618. The ratio of these numbers has its basis in the Renaissance. During this time, it was realized that when things, including our faces, are in harmony with these ratios, they are perceived as more attractive and harmonious.

As I described in a prior blog—Beauty: What Is It and What Is It Good For?—Leonard discovered a sequence of numbers where when one number was divided by the preceding it came up with the ratio of 1:1.618. This ratio was noted in beautiful things in nature such as the flower.

And a curve described by these numbers was seen in nature in the beautiful shape of a nautilus.

Take a look at the curve in this diagram.
Can you see the blocks in this picture and how the curve fits cleanly into those blocks?

These blocks represent the ratio of 1:1.618. From here:
______________________________________________
to here:
________________________________________________

If you look closely, you can see that each sequence of blocks further divide themselves according to the ratio of 1:1.618.

This ratio has applications in facial beauty as well. Our subconscious appreciates it when a face has these ratios and balance to it and tends to view those faces as more attractive and approachable.

Take a look at this patient pictured below, and consider what your mind thinks of her before photo on the left.

Now, what does your mind think about the photo on the right? Doesn’t she seem more approachable based on her appearance on the right?

Let’s apply the ratios to this example to understand why we appreciate the right photo as compared to the left photo.

Take a look at this blue portion of the curve of Fibonacci.

Now look at our patient again.

I suggest that we intrinsically like the photo on the right because her brow is higher and shows a curve that is congruent and in harmony with the ratios I wrote about earlier.

Perfect Proportion®: Applying the Ratios of Natural Beauty

When I help my patients through my treatments, I apply these ratios in a methodology I call Perfect Proportion® which is central to my approach toward my patients. This methodology allows me to apply these ratios and get results, which are powerful yet natural.

This protocol is about finding the individual, natural perfect ratios that each of our faces have and making them more visible to the world. When these individual ratios are optimized, we are viewed as more attractive and approachable. The result: the world better relates to us.

Helping people with their appearance using my Perfect Proportion® methodology, enabling them to have an easier time in the world, is what gives me professional satisfaction and the passion for what I do.

Perfect Proportion®: Powerful Terminology for Powerful Results

Three words you often see near my logo are:

Restore

Reveal

Reclaim™

I use these powerful words for good reasons. Many times when I help my patients with their appearance using my Perfect Proportion® protocol, I am bringing them back to an earlier time in their lives when their appearance was more harmonious. In essence, I’m restoring a person’s natural beauty back to a previous time.

In other cases, I’m uncovering a beauty, which has always been in a person’s appearance. Through the Perfect Proportion® I’m uncovering or revealing a person’s intrinsic and natural beauty.

Finally, in both cases, I think optimizing our appearance is our right and privilege. After I help people restore and reveal their natural beauty, they can then reclaim the natural beauty that was always theirs to begin with.

As we age, we discover that one of the most noticeable changes to our appearance involves the eye area. Perhaps the most common complaint I receive as a specialist in cosmetic eyelid rejuvenation is that my patients have heard from others that they look sick or tired, even when they are feeling well and rested.

The origin of such unwanted comments is typically the nonverbal messages the lower eyelid region sends as we age. This area can be affected by many different factors which each contribute to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes—the first is the convexity or concavity of the lower eyelid fat. If the lower eyelid fat protrudes into the lower lid region, it often catches overhead shadows.

Take a look at the shadows demonstrated by the blue arrows in the photo of this patient whom I helped with my lower eyelid rejuvenation surgery.

Because most light is above us in our world (consider sunlight outside and room lights inside), this light is likely to cast a shadow over the protruding fat that becomes visible on the skin under the lower eyelid fat. The result of the shadowing is unattractive, dark circles, sending a message of fatigue or illness.

A converse problem relating to lower eyelid fat is rare but can occur occasionally and involves the lack of fat in the lower eyelid region, causing a sunkenin appearance that similarly catches and displays shadows in the lower eyelid skin. This is the second cause of dark circles under the eyes and can be seen in the case of this patient who had sunkenin circles, which caught shadows as shown by the blue arrows, and made the eyes appear to have dark circles.

I helped him by injecting Restylane® along the bone in this region to raise the skin and decrease the shadowing.

The third factor contributing to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes is dark pigment, which can deposit in the skin in the lower eyelid region. This is usually the result of sun exposure over a lifetime.

Notice the before surgery photo of this patient who had multiple dark age spots and pigment in the skin of the lower eyelid, demonstrated by the blue arrows. These spots, along with the upper and lower eyelid appearance, were helped with my upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation techniques.

A fourth factor patients experience leading to dark circles under the eyes is the underlying vessels transmitting through the thin skin in the lower eyelid region. This can be seen in the photo of this patient who had two causes of dark circles under their eyes. They had the fullness catching shadows but, as this photo demonstrates, they also had thin skin showing the pink vessels in this region of the lower eyelid skin closer to the nose.

Finally, the fifth factor, which can play a role in the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, is the presence of lower eyelid and cheek swelling, known as lower eyelid, cheek festoons and malar mounds. This can be seen by the blue arrows in the photo of this patient pointing to the festoons before I helped her with my lower eyelid rejuvenation procedures.

These are the five most common causes of dark circles under the eyes:
1. Fullness below the eyes catching shadows.
2. Hollowing under the eyes catching shadows.
3. Brown pigment or age spots in the skin below the eyes.
4. Thin skin and redness showing through the skin in the region below the eyes.
5. Festoons and malar mounds catching shadows in the lower eyelid and cheek regions.

While these five common causes of dark eye circles can result in less than optimal nonverbal messages, there are options available to treat them, rejuvenating the appearance and cleaningup facial messages to restore effective non verbal communication.

Helping my patients with these issues is a true joy. I experience great satisfaction when patients report to me after I help them that others in the world better relate to them because these various causes of dark circles have been improved.

What Is the Difference between Lower Eyelid Bags and Lower Eyelid Festoons?

Many people who undergo lower eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of their lower lids are dissatisfied afterwards because of one factor which can complicate the results from lower eyelid surgery.

This factor is lower eyelid/cheek festoons and malar mounds.

Festoons are a medical condition in which the skin of the lower eyelid becomes significantly damaged, usually by the sun. This damaged skin can result in folds in the lower eyelids and can lead to swollen mounds on the cheeks. They often occur with age and are more common in people with lighter skin types.

Festoons occur in many people seeking lower eyelid rejuvenation and if not corrected at the time that lower lid surgery is performed, the condition can become exacerbated and make the lower eyelids look worse after surgery.

Take a look at this patient before her surgery.

She has both lower eyelid bags and festoons as demonstrated in the next two photos. The festoons are not obvious here because the front flash of the camera is washing out the shadow below them. I have outlined them here for you in black.

This photo shows both the lower lid bags outlined in white and the festoons outlined in black.

These two conditions can also be seen in the photo of another patient of mine prior to surgery. The white arrows point to the festoons, and I think you can now see the lower lid bag in the lower lid above the festoon.

The reason then why many people are dissatisfied after undergoing lower eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of their lower lids is the result of two main issues:

1. Swelling that occurs in the face after lower eyelid surgery often accumulates in the lower eyelid region and can take a while to resolve.

2. The subconscious brain constantly looks for balance in a face, and when lower eyelid fullness and festoons exist they are seen to belong together, as both are usually age-related phenomena. When only one is then corrected (usually the lower eyelid bags), the other is seen in even greater contrast. The subconscious brain then focuses in on this condition and tells the conscious brain the face is out of balance.

You can see this result in the case of this patient the day after surgery, where the bags were removed first and the festoons weren’t treated until one day later. This is her picture one day after surgery, and you will notice how much worse the festoons appear in a case like this when they not corrected at the same time the lower eyelid bags are corrected. The festoons are even more noticeable now than in the photos above taken before surgery.

Below are the patient’s photos before and after, correcting both the lower eyelid bags and festoons.

Effective Treatment for Festoons and Malar Mounds

Festoons and malar mounds have been a frustration for surgeons for many years. Thanks to the initial work of Dr. Sterling Baker (a person with whom I trained) and my own improvement and refinement on that work over the last decade, I now have a sophisticated, technically-challenging but effective treatment for festoons and malar mounds.

Many people, including some great surgeons, don’t fully understand or recognize the differences between these two conditions. I hope this blog article helps those reading to better understand those distinctions. The first difference is in their cause or etiology; festoons are a result of sun-damaged skin on the lower eyelid and on the cheek and are believed to be affected by underlying contrasting muscle forces over the years of a person’s life.

In contrast, lower eyelid bags are due to age-related fat protruding through the skin in the lower eyelid region. New research has shown that fat can grow and atrophy during our lives in asymmetric ways. The growth of fat in the orbit around the eye along with atrophy of fat in the facial regions around the eye, as well as weakness in some of the orbital containing structures, contribute the fullness we see in the lower eyelid with age.

For some individuals, this fat shows up at a very young age and this is believed to a result of genetic changes in the development of the eye area in those individuals.

The second difference is the location on the face where they form. Lower eyelid festoons can be seen primarily on the cheek with some presence in the lower eyelid region. Lower eyelid bags are located directly below the lower eyelid lashes and are noticed to become more prominent when someone with these bags looks upwards. Conversely, festoons are minimally affected when a person looks upwards.

The third difference is the feel of these conditions when they are touched. Festoons are squishy and can be made to move side to side. Lower eyelid bags are firmer, deeper in location beneath the skin and can’t be moved easily side to side when touched.

It is important to understand the differences between these two conditions. The best rejuvenation and most natural results occur when both eyelid bags and festoons are corrected simultaneously.

Most of what I discuss is related to understanding the impact our appearances have on how the world views and relates to us. When I cover these topics, I explain we are biologically driven to evaluate each other based on the 3 Ds of Aging:

Deterioration of the Facial Skin

Deflation of the Face

Decent of the Face

It’s true that typically when we first meet one another we evaluate each other’s skin tone and tend to appreciate clear, beautiful, and even skin. We then evaluate each other’s eyes and mouth regions. This happens quickly and on a subconscious basis. We aren’t being shallow; it’s just how our brains work.

Our subconscious then tells our conscious mind how we feel about that person based on what we see in those areas. If the skin is irregular, we may see the person as older or sick. If the eyelids are heavy or baggy, we may form the opinion that the individual is old, tired, sick, sleepy or even hung-over from too much alcohol the night before.

What does your mind see in the photo on the left of my patient when he first came to see me? Does your opinion change when you view the picture on the right which shows him after I performed lower eyelid rejuvenation surgery?

This patient was a teacher and his students often thought he was sick, fatigued or drinking too much based on the non-verbal cues from his lower eyelid fullness. These comments ceased after this area was improved with surgery. Now his students can relate to him without the eyelid fullness shaping their opinions.

Let’s look at another example in the picture of the woman below. What opinion does your mind form of this woman when viewing the photo on the left? Does she appear happy or stern, approachable or not?

What does your mind see in the photo on the right? You can clearly see she now appears more open and approachable as well as more pleasant. The only thing that changed for this patient was the heaviness around her eyes. These two photos are before (left) and after (right) my Botox Browlift procedure, which made a big impact on the way other people related to her.

When we look at the mouth area and see loss of volume in the lines around the nose to the corners of the mouth, and also from the corners of the mouth to the jawline and jowling in the jawline, we often assess that the person is older, sick and less vibrant in appearance.

Check out the additional before and after photo below. Stop and consider how your mind interprets my patient’s photo on the right and then on the left. By restoring the volume of youth to her lower face, she found that others viewed her as years younger and more vibrant.

Examining the Impact of the Central Face

I enjoy the fact that I can help my patients with all three of the D’s of aging with outpatient procedures that have quick recoveries. When I assist patients in these ways, the reward is twofold: the world relates to them better, and I experience great professional satisfaction and joy from helping my patients.

With this as a background, I’d like to share a story about a recent medical meeting I attended. At this meeting, a doctor who helped perform the first facial transplant in the United States, Dr. Daniel Alam, spoke about his experiences in this surgery.

He began by reinforcing what I have been saying for years about how we relate to each other as people. We evaluate each other’s key areas for nonverbal communication: the eyes and mouth region.

When either of these areas is made more attractive, the entire face appears more attractive. In this way, these areas hold special power in how our subconscious brains communicate with each other.

Dr. Alam continued to say that our personal identities revolve around these central parts of the face. He referred to research, which showed we look at each other’s eyes and mouths as we communicate with one another.

This research paper by Caroline Blais et al, entitled “Culture Shapes How We Look at Faces,” discussed cultural differences in how we evaluate each other, and showed that the central areas of the face absolutely dominate non-verbal communication.

To illustrate this research, the doctor showed in his presentation how we can take a photo of our current President,

and place it on another person.

After doing this, our brain will still tell us that this is President Barak Obama.

In actuality, this photo is of actor Brad Pitt with President Obama’s central face superimposed.

The doctor then discussed that in certain medical cases, the central face can become distorted. He showed photos of one of the first facial transplant patients in the United States. This patient, Connie Culp, suffered a gunshot wound to the face in a devastating case of domestic violence. Ms. Culp’s husband shot her in the face and then tried to shoot himself. Both survived but Ms. Culp was left with a massive injury to her central face. Her subsequent surgeries left her with a distorted face.

Dr. Alam then discussed how our identity is defined by these central facial areas, and how, in cases like Ms. Culp’s, her injury made it difficult for her to be accepted by others. In our society, people may have trouble being friends with Ms. Culp based on her appearance.

Although we would like to believe we relate to others based on what they say and do, the nonverbal language that influences our subconscious mind, does indeed influence the way we interpret each other.

We yearn as social human beings to relate and interact with one another, and Ms. Culp’s injury made it difficult for her to build new relationships and friendships. In fact, Ms. Culp shared that in the deformed state, children would often run away from her and call her a monster.

Children don’t have the mental sophistication to allow them to overpower their initial subconscious impressions. But what they see, we subconsciously see in the same way.

Fortunately, Ms. Culp lives in this age of incredible medical advances. She underwent one of the first facial transplants in the world. Now, she has a much easier time living life day-to-day, interacting with others, and she is experiencing more acceptance from people around her. These days, children don’t run away or call her names. The people she encounters relate to her in a more positive way.

The sophistication of these procedures will continue to advance and give hope to others with serious facial injuries like Ms. Culp.

What I found so intriguing about this procedure is why it was performed in the first place. The surgeon performed the procedure in order to help this person relate better to others in the world. This is the same reason I love doing what I do. Helping my patients restore, reveal and reclaim their natural beauty, helps them relate better to others in the world as well. It’s powerful for our patients, professionally fulfilling for us as doctors, and it’s all along the same spectrum.

When I meet new patients for the first time, I assess their situations through this lens. I consider what I can do to help them recapture their natural beauty and improve the way others relate to them. My ultimate goal is to achieve enhanced appearances for patients and, in turn, facilitate enhanced relationships to create better lives.
