Laser Skin Resurfacing in Tampa Bay

Although the carbon dioxide laser has been used to perform surgery for over 30 years, a recent technological breakthrough now allows precise alteration of damaged and wrinkled skin with the laser. As opposed to a chemical peel, dermabrasion or other forms of laser treatment, Erbium laser skin resurfacing in the Tampa Bay area facilitates customized surgery not only for each patient, but also for each area of the face. For example, the thinner, more fragile skin of the eyelids requires specialized, more delicate treatment than the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead.

Women and men appreciate laser skin resurfacing because it effectively corrects:

  • Sun damaged skin
  • Acne scars
  • Some pre-cancerous skin conditions
  • Age spots and superficial pigmentation
  • Wrinkles

Dr. Scheiner uses a special type of Erbium laser known as the Sciton Contour, which has 2 treatment heads, one that ablates tissue at a chosen layer, and one that seals vessels to reduce bleeding and redness. Unlike many other Erbium lasers, the Sciton Contour gives Dr. Scheiner the ability to perform a superficial or deeper peel depending on patient needs. The customizability of this laser helps to achieve amazing results.

The Procedure

Laser skin resurfacing is performed in a specially equipped laser room. The length of your procedure will depend on how much of your face is being treated. Dr. Scheiner will discuss the method of anesthesia that most appropriate for you.

During your procedure, the Erbium laser energy will be applied to your face in quick bursts. With the first pass of the laser beam, the old skin will be vaporized. Subsequent passes cause the collagen in the underlying layers to tighten, resulting in smoother, healthier skin. Discomfort can vary from patient to patient.

You will be given medication to keep you comfortable during and after the procedure. Immediately after the treatment, your skin will be very red and sensitive. The degree of redness depends on the age and health of your skin. The redness will fade to pink and gradually resolve. You can usually cover the pink color with makeup after 10 to 14 days.

Someone will need to drive you home after your procedure, and you'll probably want to relax for the rest of the day. You'll need to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after your procedure. You can usually cover the pink color with makeup after 10 to 14 days. Also avoid liquid foundations or pressed powder foundations for 14 days.

Expectations

Serious complications with laser skin resurfacing are extremely rare, but like any medical procedure, it does have some risks. Choosing a specialist like Dr. Scheiner, who is experienced in laser skin resurfacing, can significantly minimize the risks. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their appearance after healing; however, we cannot guarantee you will have the results you desire.
